Bring BHF Back

And I am kind of regretting posting this thread when I did. What I posted, as the OP, needed to be said and addressed, but as was pointed out to me (and I 100% agree) my timing wasn't great given Solly's passing.

There was a time I wrote an article for the board almost daily. Especially in the off season. Some enjoyed my posts and some did not. The more I exposed my thoughts, the more conflict it brought. I grew tired of defending myself on a daily basis. I had many other irons in the fire. Many other priorities that needed attention. Now I do drive-bys and read others posts. It suits me better than continual conflict and personal attacks. When some of my adversaries became monitors and actually asked me to leave because of opinions on third rail. Independents didn't do well on a red board. Never lost a minute of sleep over my self retirement from slowing down.

Same happened on facebook. It caused me much grief when people posted the many lies traveling on the internet on my page, from both sides of the election. I flushed my membership down the drain, vowing never to return. I'm doing quite well with my occasional drive-by comments these days. Am actually living again and not tied to a keyboard. I'm even off my blood preasure meds these days. LOL

I hear you brother. I have a limited # of FB friends. Primarily family and close friends just because of what you mentioned above. The other aspect is I always have the ability to unfriend someone. I've never had a Twitter account and never will. I don't need that much social Media in my life. BHF is a great outlet for Husker related stuff. :)

Life is too short to be that stressed out all the time. The less I have the better my life. ;)

Again I want to point out that if you really can't take it anymore, you can add other members to your ignore list. I hate to do it, I like a free and open discussion, but sometimes you have to do it.

yeah, and probably many or most here have one or two or a handful of posters that make their bhf experience less than enjoyable, either for the manner in which they post, the habit of posting the exact same thing over and over in multiple threads, or the fact that they post their opinion and claim it as fact and then defend each and every comment to the contrary; but the rub is that without different points of view, there's not much to discuss, but finding that fine line between allowing discussion but not allowing too much that turns people away is always the problem with these types of message boards.

personally, I think the server issues or software or whatever it was is what has resulted in a more dead than usual board in the offseason. I know I had to constantly refresh every page to see if there were new posts or refresh threads to see the new posts, I'm sure many got frustrated and left or thought the board was dead or broken and left. regardless, it's the offseason, so not much to discuss aside from legal issues and offseason training and incoming recruits making grades or new recruits...

I think it will pick up once fall camp rolls around and we can start discussing POB leaving midseason and how Cav is on the hot seat for poor OL performance and Davis is on the hot seat for poor recruiting, etc.

and yeah, I don't even have facebook. if I wanted to talk to someone I went to high school with I'd make a few phone calls to get their phone number or email and reach out to them directly. I don't give a ****e what someone is having for breakfast or that their kid's kindergarten graduation was awesome to behold.

Haven't posted on this site in months and just happened to check this morning.

For what it's worth, it seemed to me that plenty of posters got ran off for voicing opinions, thoughts and ideas that didn't coincide with long time posters. This site used to be a fun place to check before and after games. Lots of snarky attitude, condescension, and unnecessary censorship/suspensions turned this site into a pretty miserly place.

Man, hit the nail on the head with this one. There were some long time posters and even a particular "high ranking" admin fighting with people when their opinions didn't match their own. Hard to have credibility when this particular admin would fight with and bait people who offer a difference of opinion - then at the same time give "time outs" to those who are doing exactly what he is. This was mainly during the last couple years of the Pelini experiment. Got to the point where it wasn't worth the headache, listening to constant "i am right because i have inside information/sources" vs the "who cares, i see what i see on the field of play"

This is/was a good site - especially for those out of state who rely on places like this to get their "Husker fix"....Lets get back to that!

As for myself, I was offered more than once a monitors position or administrative status. I turned them down as I thought it to be a conflict of interest. It's difficult to get into a debate and sometimes heated debate, and be objective as a monitor. Saw it happen more than once that a monitor participating in such a discussion, use his authority to win the debate with malice. The very reason I turned down the offers. I enjoyed the banter and debates too much. Not all, but there were a couple that used that authority as a weapon. Especially when I was asked to leave. I had been a charter member of the board. On the very first page of registered members. Number 27 as I recall back in 2001. I was recruited by Johnny Blackshirt to write for BHF from huskerpedia.

I love different takes on events and subjects. I entertained others to debate. It's when it got personal that I had to take exception. Personal attacks by some members were inevitable. They occurred time and again. This sight was booming with many posters participating. Certain people time and again just could not interact without getting personal. Some needed restraint. That was the monitors job. I love the game of football. Would discuss it anytime with anyone. Sometimes playing devils advocate and many who knew me knew my MO and didn't take it personally. Some had trouble. This sight will rebound again. Too many Husker fans to let it die.

In essence what everyone seems to want is for the board itself to have no allegiance to any particular coach, coaching staff, offensive/defensive philosophy or player. If the admins want to participate in the debates, of which there are bound to still be many, then its probably easy enough to create an alter ego identity with which to do that while still maintaining admin impartiality on the official level.

I personally would hate to restrict anyone the ability to express opinions......differing or otherwise. I have had others differ from my opinions and it always stimulates thought on my part. For me it's a simple matter of how they're expressed and the degree someone goes to disqualify one opinion to bolster another. Without disagreement I think the board will not work. I just hope everyone disagrees with ideas and limits personal attacks.

I have viewed other boards [time constraints limit how much, so this might not be a fair assessment] and when discussion turns to personal attacks, and counter attacks, they seem to take over and I lose all interest. They also seem to upstage the good thoughts and posts that were made prior. It would seem to be simple to skim through and find where informative thoughts start again but it turns into a pain and I'm soon distracted and leave.

The alter ego idea is interesting, but I personally don't mind when administration, and/or, mods have differing opinions as long as they're expressed in a civil way. As long as no one is beat up because they like to run more, or run less, or want an emotional coach, or a subdued one or...... I'm fine.

I've come kind of late to this party so I don't probably know all prior activities (good or bad), and if I did, I might feel different, but we have plenty of enemies out there, we don't need to beat each other up. Without stimulation and disagreement however, I'm afraid we might atrophy. Stimulating, civil, thoughtful disagreement is welcomed by me.

Personal attacks, constantly beating a dead horse when proven otherwise, and trying to win an agreement for the sake of winning said argument, aren't all that palatable to me however.

Our love for our program often leads to having a personally, and emotionally, invested interest in our coaches. We need to come to terms with that imo. Attacks, or strong support, for coaches will often lead to spirited discussion. It is an area that I personally try to voice, but in a metered way. It's a little like attacking someone's family. If we don't like how a coach is acting, or performing, I think it is fine to bring up.......just be prepared for counter arguments.....some strong ones.

When a point has been made, sometimes it is just best to let it to speak for itself. It is hard to do when someone strongly disagrees, but an effort should be made imo. Also be prepared to be proven wrong. Time will often determine the winner of an argument. I've eaten crow long after I've taken a position......it happens.

Not sure where you got that feeling from. I have not read anyone making anything close to that claim. Discussing a coach that is not doing well is not the same as "having no allegiance", IMO.

That said, first allegiance should be to the U, not any one person!

The items posters are talking in this thread are all part of operating a board. If you try to get rid of those dead horse beaters, and others, the board starts to die. Again, that comes with these types of boards.. Every board deals with it, some just deal with it differently.. The sites that can deal with it even handily are the ones that prosper.

Were you around during either of the regime changes in the 2000s?

No, my join date is 2013, like yours.

My understanding of that post, the poster seemed to suggest what he/she did because of this thread. That is why I posted what I did.

Maybe I misunderstood what that poster was referring to.

Oct. 2013 is when they moved from the old server to the new one; every who was on the old site has a join date of Oct. 2013.

In terms of my question, there was a ton of strife on the board during both of the coaching changes. Things that you could criticize an older staff for you couldn't criticize the new staff for, and visa versa.

Cdog is correct. And, when one coach can't be criticized, and some others declare the new coach a failure before he steps on campus, and inject it in every thread, that becomes a situation that have no desire to deal with, and a place that I no longer want to frequent.

chuckle, I didn't realize that.

Are you referring to the mods or just posters in general? If mods, then that is something the admins have to address and if they don't then I understand people leaving. If it is posters, then every board I have ever visited have those types of posters.. you just need mods that will handle it.

There are no boards that are busy that don't have posters that inject their opinions (good, bad or repetitive) into every thread.. it is the nature of the beast. You just have to manage it best you can.
