Bring BHF Back

my two scents

The bedrock of a fan forum is twofold

1. The "debate"

We love to voice our opinion...but more importantly, we really hope someone disagrees.

2. We love to complain about what we are most passionate about.

The proof is how active this forum is after a loss. A 10 point victory over an average Minnesota team is not going to spark interest here.

Now, let's relate these two theories with the state of the Husker program the last 15-20 years.

Solich was in a no-win situation...replacing the one and only. It was very easy to make comparisons, and voice our displeasure with the program he led. The interest in the Husker program continued, if for no other reason, see #2

Callahan - where to begin. Square peg, round hole personified. Again see #2. Plenty of b!+ching and moaning to keep the board active during his tenure

Pelini - what a gem this guy was. His tenure here kept #2 from being the issue. 9-3 every year keeps the fan base restless but hopeful. No, what he brought to this forum was a $h!+load of #1. The Pro-Pelini crowd and the anti-Pelini crowd had endless debates here. Very active board.

Which brings us to today.

Mike Riley - While he has received some criticism, even his most ardent detractors agree Pelini left the cupboard bare when he left. Most are willing to give him time to right the ship with his own recruits. There is no debating Mike Riley is one of the most respected and honorable coaches in the profession. HCMR and the circumstances for which he took over this program have negated both numbers 1 and 2. If we don't see improvement this year and expectations aren't met by season 4, this board will come to life.

Finally, the off season gives husker junkies a great opportunity to debate how all of our highly drafted players will do in the NFL. The last two seasons? Well, no explanation needed.

Interesting stuff about the state-of-affairs dealing with not only BHF, but husker nation in its entirety. The collapse has happened. The pain has been numbed. So where do we go from here? Imo it's pretty simple....we either rebuild or we fold our cards and bid sayonara. There have been dark days before, but the difference is that we have never fallen so far........because we have never been so high.

I'm a little different than some others. I'm ready to rebuild, but I'm also willing to look at new options. Some things should never change (eg. We're Nebraska we don't want to win at all costs. We want to win......but in the right way. If we have to hurt individuals and break the rules, the price is too high.) BUT some things can change for me and I'll be fine with the changes......different defense, different offense, emotional coach, calm coach....whatever works is fine with me. I love precision, and I love winning. I hope we can find a way to do both.

As for message boards, I find some very good things and some not so good things. Some friends call them "public coffee shops" or "public bar rooms". I like the fact that they allow for increased information; the ability to vent; and help maintain enthusiasm for our product. What I don't like is the ability to "shoot from behind a veil". If you won't say it to someone's face.....then don't say it here either. What I am seeing in the public is a carry-over from the internet relationships and methods. People are losing a sense of proper etiquette and personal interaction. It's becoming cruel and mean out there. That's too bad imo.

One final thing, if an argument can not be won without personal attacks, it isn't worth winning. I know it isn't the way of technical interaction, and it isn't the way the younger generation is becoming used to, but I think it is a better way.....boring or not.

I am very sorry to hear about Solly. I'm sure he was as great a person as he was a fan here. Very sad news. Did he live in Leavenworth KS?

BHF is always my first stop in the Huskerverse. Super fans here that I like to know what they think. The game day chat room is a particular highlight. Im not a frequent poster but I'll try to up my game to help with traffic.

The debate is essential. It is the only thing these boards are about. This one has suffered IMO from trying to moderate the debate too much and at times delving into trying to moderate opinion. As long as there are no personal attacks or explicit language, if that offends people, then let folks have at it.

I definitely wouldn't be in favor of a real hands-off approach to moderation. What can easily kill a board like this is when threads degenerate into the same tired arguments over. And over. And over. And over again. Some people never get tired of that. And sure, they'll provide a board with lots of 'activity'. But they'll also drive away more civilized types. As far as communities go, you reap what you sow...

A perfect example of just telling those posters.. "enough, take it to PM" if they continue one more time but add.. you will be banned from posting in this thread if you don't stop.

Just takes a mod that can leave his or her opinion out of it and enforce the rules, the same rules, for everyone.

Then maybe I'm in the minority, because I don't visit BHF primarily to debate or argue (which is the direction many "debates" end up going). I come to take in other persepectives, learn a few things from those who have more knowledge than myself, get some inside info, and celebrate, or commisurate, with fellow fans. Debating or arguing is way down the list for me..... :dunno:

I think this was one of the big culprits to be honest. There was a period where it started drifting here and a lot of long time posters left at that juncture.

Just wanted to let you know, that I have been reading this thread and taking notes. I too enjoy a good debate and I will be discussing this with the other administrators and moderators.

We are also working on some upgrades to the board and should be doing that soon.

When we are ready to make some announcements (The next week or two), I will close this thread and open a new one and we can discuss the changes on that thread.

Again, I want to thank everyone for their loyalty over the years and I hope to continue to grow the board.

Yes but turning EVERY thread into the same argument gets old also.

There also comes point where everyone has to stop complaining (that sounds worse than I meant it).. What I mean is, if a thread is starting to delve into the same tired routine a mod needs to step up, if that doesn't happen then a poster needs to moderate himself by just staying out of that thread, or ignore the two and go back to the subject at hand.

Once a mod does make it in and takes care of those two (which is usually what happens, two posters disagree), the posts can get back on topic. it can actually work just fine if the rules are clear, concise and most importantly enforced equally.

In regards to personal attacks.. Make it simple...

1) Do NOT make a direct/indirect negative comment about a poster. Sure everyone has a differing opinion on what is personal and what isn't, but that can be simple as well.. nothing that can be viewed as negative will be allowed, and this is in the opinion of the moderator. In stead of banning posters for good, just ban them from a thread, if need be.

Posters will start to get the idea over time. Yes, there are some posters that will join that will only want to mix it up, and that isn't a bad thing as long as that poster doesn't attack the other posters. Again, mods have to take care of it, and others will have to help by using the report a post thingy.

Exactly. And when every thread is interjected with how bad the coaches suck, then why in the h#ll would I want to listen to that, on a supposedly Husker Fan site? I am all for criticism, but if it finds it's way into every thread,, then I will just go fishing instead of get on BHF...... :dunno:

The key here is the mods need to keep the thread on topic, which in theory should cut down on what you are saying.

The problem is, there are only so many "takes" on a particular subject. Not every post is going to be a fresh, wow, never thought of that before. And once posters have been around for a while, everyone pretty much knows where they stand on a topic.

I completely understand what you're saying Jarhead. But forums like this are terrific because it gives people who live far away from Lincoln, a place to come to and talk about Nebraska football--both good and bad. If you feel someone is rehashing a topic or beating a dead horse, then take the high road and not respond. Or, post a comment that is merely an emoji expressing whatever thought you have and leave it there.

Look at sports talk radio, you think listening to Big Red Over-reaction, after a win or loss, there's a huge variance of takes? Nope, it's mostly the same stuff said over and over again, the words and callers are just slightly different.

That's the nature of these internet message boards my friend. You have to take the good with the bad.

Also, if it gets really bad, go into your settings at the top left of the board and there is an "Edit Ignore List" under "My Account" in the left column. Add them to it.

Something I think should be written into a forum's rules:

I would like to see this board grow by advertising it more. I know it likely will come with a price but it would be nice to hear this site being mentioned on the local airwaves.
