Billy Devany gone!

It's kind of entertaining how the national pundits are couching predictions of frosts success between comments on "The weak big 10 west" . They know we are going to be good again but have to temper their thoughts and have a backstop.

No, we are going to be very good again and it has nothing to do with playing in a week division. The template has been laid and it's clear to anyone that's paying attention that Nebraska is going to be on a dramatic upswing comparable to USC in the 2000s.

Part of the "pundits" tentative nature, we've earned imo. We've shown up on the big stage and stumbled too many times recently for many to come to our defense. I'm guessing some are feeling it is safer bet to bet against us than for us. I can't say that I blame them too much.

If we want them to eat crow, we are going to have to force feed it to 'em. There is only one way that is going to happen. We have the recipe from our days in the Orange Bowl and in the days when we took SEC teams like Tennessee and Florida out back and (to use Coach Fulmer's words) gave them a good old fashioned butt kicking.

We've been in a weak league before, and that didn't stop us from becoming great......and we were great. The big two and little six was just an excuse used by other conferences to justify why we played for all the marbles as often as we did. It didn't mean anything once we started beating all the other top dogs.

It's time to roll up our sleeves and get to work. Words mean little.......results mean everything.

I agree. But still, you KNOW that if we were talking about Michigan or Notre Dame instead of Nebraska, the national script would be entirely different.

What goes around, comes around. Once upon a time, we had to fight for national respect. It was awfully sweet back in 1971 when the Huskers force fed the pundits crow after they said Notre Dame was 'more deserving' of the national championship in 1970 than Nebraska was.

The ridicule the team took before the 1994 Orange Bowl game against Florida State was another example.

I guess you could say that part of our heritage is to smile and take national skepticism as a badge of honor.

I agree. I think it is fine for fans to debate our public perception, and the relationship it has on recruiting, ranking and how it might unknowingly influence officiating calls.

What I do not want is the perception that we are being picked on to permeate the staff, the team or the program. I really want the players and coaches to feel that if they work hard enough and plan smart enough, that their destiny is in their own hands......because I think it is.

I don't want optimism to just be lip service. We've had a mouthful of that. I want everyone involved to look at the situation and be smart enough to know what it takes to be successful, and be prepared to work hard enough to implement the necessary steps.

I wish I could remember the player that was asked if the smack thrown out by Miami players was out of line after they had pushed us around for a few years. I don't remember the player, but I do remember his response.........."Until we beat them, I don't have much to say. We need to let our playing do our talking". I like that attitude. I think it was that attitude that made us what we became that year, and the years after.

Yep. It won't happen overnight but I view what you've said as part and parcel of the 'culture change' that Frost and his staff will work to bring about.

Are you indicating that Frost did not want him? They made several in home visits with him including one right when he got back from visiting Wisconsin. Just curious if I missed something...

No- I meant it takes both. Frost wanted him.... sure time may have been a factor in him staying with The Drunken Sconnies... but if he really was bleeding Husker Red, he would have leapt as soon as the phone rang.
