Barhknecht is retiring

It didn't specify exactly when - I'm assuming soon? If so, it's a bit interesting that he'd do it just as Frost's first season gets started. I would think for a sports journalist - even if he doesn't consider himself a homer - this would be a relative 'gold mine'.

It'd be like a political commentator retiring just weeks before a presidential election.....

He's leaving in a couple of weeks. OWH offered him a buy-out to get him off their payroll and he took it.

I heard The Atlantic is looking for a writer to cover Nebraska. He might get that gig if he's interested.

Personally, I've never liked the guy. His Michigan vote in the AP poll back in 1998 still sticks in my craw.

I have zero beef with the guy. He was always nice to me when I helped out with Steve and Big Red Report post practice. Let me tell you, a non-media regular sticks out like a sore thumb.

Didn't care for his Michigan vote, but I think he was trying to establish his "I'm not a homer" credentials. Any time a veteran reporter is given a buyout, I question the credibility of the company. Obviously, they want someone cheaper and less-experienced. That's not good.

The OWH cut several jobs either last year or earlier this year. Doesn't surprise me at all they bought him out. They have no money/

All newspapers are deeply challenged financially in this day and age. The internet has killed the print model and advertising for digital isn't close to what they got for print.
I know that the "not a homer" tone rubbed many the wrong way - that's too bad - because there should always be room for objective journalism.

Dr. Fumble- did you mean The Athletic? Or The Atlantic?

The bolded part cannot be said enough. Nobody learns anything by constantly being told only what they want to hear.

Okay, I buy that, guys. But.......

Don't try convincing me that an "objective" journalist who covered that Husker team wasn't playing games voting for Michigan over Nebraska that season.

PS. Yeah, I meant the Athletic, Chris. Oops.

Exactly what I was going to say...voting that way to not be seen as a Homer completely shows you're not objective as it would to vote for a team because you are a Homer...

Actions without some minimal type of "agenda" are almost impossible. That's just human nature. In his case that vote hurt a lot of people. I thought it was wrong and lame at the time. I still do today.

I've never heard Lee say that's why he did it. If he truly thought the vote was right... well, we're all wrong once in a while, homer or no. If that is why he did it, it was a bad choice on his part.

Besides that- there's some pretty good Husker coverage from him over the years

Yeeeeah, I supposed you're right, Chris.

But when it comes to Barfy screwing over my Huskers with an absolutely stupid AP vote that garnered a lot of national attention at the time, I'm not yet in 'forgive and forget' mode.

It's only been 20 years. :)
