Ameer Abdullah has Words on Rhule

I agree with Husker99. We’re fans of one of CFB’s Bluebloods. If we don’t have high expectations, something’s wrong.

That said, it’s gonna take some time for Coach Rhule to get rolling. So we’ve got to give him some time.

High expectations are fine. I was looking at it more from the view of "what does Rhule have to do so Trev/next AD does not have to can him"

Oh you have observed the team divided? Glad to know that.
You assumed the team is divided, you havent been in the locker room or talked to any of them so you dont know. You also made the assumption that they wanted their old coaches to be retained.
I made the remark that, even if Mickey had been retained (as HC) we dont know how many of those other coaches he was going to keep.
What your problem with that remark is I have no clue. But whatever.
Yes, players lobbying for the job to go to Joseph is an observation.
Yes, seeing players who were starting games or getting significant playing time enter the portal is an observation.

From your lips to God's ear.
I trust Ameer but still and no offense to him or any Coach RHULE people .....I'm on the fence with my feelings yet. I have been led astray by the last 2 Coaching hires so talk is cheap....Actions speak.....If he can bring back the Physical, Dominant, Tough best Conditioned team on the field and prove he is committed to controlling the line of scrimmage by RUNNING THE DAMN BALL.....like he says he wants to do...then I'm all in but only after I see he is committed to sticking with who NEBRASKA IS.....that's been our identity for ever.....I'm so sick of hearing that teams out NEBRASKA us......that's a huge slap in the kisser that none of us ever wanna hear again.

DOC HOLIDAY

You warned us about Frost at the time of his hire. I loved the hire so I disregarded your view.

So this time I'm gonna defer to the Blackshirt and follow suit on Rhule. I'm gonna be cautiously optimistic but I'm not drinking any kool-aid until we see the product.

Until we see the product Coach Rhule puts on the field, everything at this point (positive or negative) is pure conjecture. But how could a true-blue Husker fan NOT GET JAZZED about Trev's choice and the future of our program?

For starters:
  1. Rhule was the top choice out there. Auburn and others wanted him too and he said no. Heck, Wisconsin's AD panicked and made an eleventh hour change in his HC plans after we hired Rhule. And for what its worth, Luke Fickell would have come here instead of Wiscy if Trev had wanted him.
  2. Rhule is a detail man. If the regimes of Mikey and Frost told us anything, it's that the little details matter...A LOT.
  3. Rhule is 'The Nebraska Way' personified. Frost was near-universally hailed as the return to the Devaney-Osborne way of doing things. But while I was all-in on SF's hire, I'll admit I always had a queazy little gut-level concern about how how his offense would work in the B1G. Looking back, I think part of it was that I convinced myself that a power rushing attack would naturally be a part of his plan even though we were given no real reason to expect it. We just remembered Frost QB'ing our 1997 team and made that assumption. But in hindsight, Frost was more Chip Kelly than he was Tom Osborne. With Rhule, he's made it crystal clear that his goal is to develop teams that will be about tough, physical football that run the ball and stop the run. THAT, my fellow Husker fans, is what we've been wanting to see for the past 20 years.
  4. Everyone of Rhule's hires to date has shown himself to be a recruiter; and
  5. Everyone of Rhule's hires to date is someone he would describe as a high-energy gunner.
That's enough for starters to me to get super-excited by what we can look forward to for Husker Football. For every fan who wants to poo-poo Rhule's (IMO impressive) resume turning around Temple and Baylor, I'd ask you this: How many rising college coaches have you seen get multiple NFL teams vying for their services as was the case when Rhule was at Baylor? We've become so used to failure that we've become naturally skeptical. But Matt Rhule is the Real Deal, folks. GBR!!!

In my opinion, Trev Alberts pulled off a coup and we'll be looking back at Rhule's hire as the beginning of the return of Big Red Football. As a fan, I say 'screw caution.' I'm all-in again--but this time without that queazy feeling in the pit of my stomach.

I agree with Dr F. I have been following NU football for a long time. Since TO, NU has made a habit of taking diamonds in the rough, good old boys, over the hill, and unproven coaches.
Solich, had an over the hill staff and could not recruit. He had no HC experience. This was apparent but we were blinded by the TO era.
Callahan was a great recruiter but did not understand the college game. He also stuck with his assistant coaches when they were failing.
Pelini could coach but was a total asshat. He had no HC experience. He brought in a minor league staff and micromanaged them to the extreme. His demeanor kept him from being able to hire quality assistants and poisoned the recruiting well.
Riley was an over the hill coach. He had long since lost his fire and was no longer suited for a power 5 program. He brought in a staff of good old boys and was looking for a fat paycheck until retirement.
Frost was a one hit wonder. He had minimum HC experience. Too full of himself to self-evaluate. He also brought in a little league staff and most of them never developed the skills necessary to coach at this level.

Rhule is different. He has extensive HC experience. He is bringing in a first-rate staff who are proven recruiters. He has rebuilt two other programs who any thinking being knows were a much tougher rebuild than NU will be. He is well spoken, well respected and confident. He is young and full of energy. To be blunt he fills all the blanks. I will be very disappointed if this hire is not a home run.

You nailed it, Cigarman! With Pederson, Osborne, and Eichorst, we had ADs who thought the program would elevate their HC'ing choice. Isn't it supposed to work the other way around???

And the unique confluence of circumstances that surrounded Frost's "Miracle Season" at UCF led to a lot of assumptions being made (without a whole lot of evidence) that we were getting the Second Coming of Urban Meyer. Instead we got a young, bullheaded version of Mike Riley with less-experienced assistants.

Apparently, it took six years of losing football before the program got humbled enough for our illusions of grandeur to get stripped away enough to finally get serious about getting the kind of seasoned coach who could bring to the program exactly what's been sorely lacking.

Amen, Cigarman!

No hire is ever a lead-pipe certainty. But it's nearly impossible to look at how Trev Alberts conducted this search and the head coach he sought after and nabbed and not believe we've FINALLY got a quality, experienced coach who can bring the program back from the dead.
