All things Emmett

And people didn't like him early on at NU. They begged for a couple of broken knees to play over him.

It's not that fans didn't like him but, speaking for myself, I never saw him as a 'premier' RB. He showed talent from the beginning but if anyone had told me Johnson would be an All American RB before he left DONU, I'd have told him he was full of it.

In my book, with running backs you either have it or not from Day One. Even though he wasn't highly recruiting as an RB, I could tell Ameer had it right away. Same with all of our other Hall of Fame roster of Husker running backs. The closest I thought I'd ever be to an unexpected, 'breakout' Husker RB star was Ziggy who stepped it up big time in Frost Year One.

That was...until Emmett Johnson. EJ's transformation the moment Dana Holgorsen became our OC was The Most Dynamic Change I'd seen since the Pelini brothers became Ndamukong Suh's coach.

Ozigbo had it over the rest of the stable of talentless RBs back then before his senior year. My biggest complaint was why is he not playing, and why did we mostly recruit midgets?

I dont think Dana changed Emmett at all. I think he just finally gave him a shot. Everytime he was in he would do something good and then get benched. Hunnchy and I had been calling for him to be the starter for close to two years before Dana finally did it

I didn't mean to imply Holgorsen did. But he recognized the talent Emmett had put his faith in him. That's all EJ needed.

That was EJ's coming out party vs Denver. 73 yard TD. Big play to get KC in position for FG at end of 1st half where he used a monster stiff arm to break free. Making plays on KO coverage. Ran the KO in the last 2 minutes back to almost the 50. KC probably should have won largely due to EJ balling out.

I'm not sure the Chiefs at the time realized what a bargain they were getting in the fifth round of the draft.

His problem was not tacklers on the field it was the likes of Satterfield who should have called Mayflower the day Dana showed up.
