but that is about it! 9 yards of rushing..It took 400 yards passing to beat Purdue! I seriously expected way more from the team and the coaches, especially coming out of a bye week.

but like I said, it is a W, no doubt about it.

Team didn't quit, love seeing that.
Tanner was very good passing.

It's really a loss for the program overall, but I'm happy that the players got a win.

I'm still sitting here not sure exactly what I am feeling. On one hand, I am "happy" Nebraska won, but struggling like that, against Purdue is sickening. On the other hand, Nebraska struggles to beat mediocre to poor teams and gets demolished by good / great teams. The sports writer who said we're now Oregon State East is correct. The worst part? The architect of arguably the greatest rushing offense in college football history lives in Lincoln and is a phone call away. I don't know for 100%, but if he was asked, I'm 99% sure Tom Osborne would help with Nebraska's run game.

What pisses me off the most about Mike Riley is how he flat out lies about wanting to run the ball. Nebraska is in 10 personnel (I'm estimating) probably 80% of the time. When it's just 5 OL trying to block 6-7 defenders, that's not schematically sound football. And Mike Riley "wonders" why he can't run the ball effectively.

Again I'm happy NU won, but this schtick is BEYOND old.

It was tough to watch until that final drive. But let's give credit where credit is due -- that was a beautiful drive! There are so many disappointing aspects of this program right now, and I'm not suggesting we should throw a parade because we beat 3-4 Purdue. Let's hope this is the beginning of playing better in all phases of the game. I doubt it, but I've still got enough Kool-Aid in my veins to hope they'll get a few more Ws.

I totally understand what you're saying, but stop and think about those last few words of your post...

Here we are, as Nebraska fans, the team is currently 4-4 and we're "hoping" for just a "few more" wins. My god, how far has Nebraska fallen? We're clinging to hope that we can get to 6-6.

Which is exactly why we need a hard reset for the program.

Well, I can say for sure that changes are going to be made and this game made it very clear it needed to be done.

Bradley was clearly the better runner, but they don't stick with him.. WTF? Just curious how many other players like that are on the bench for some reason.

These coaches totally baffle me!

EDIT: I know I said it before, but Tanner was really good!

How many years does the next guy get? New coach, coaching staff, another new offense, another new defense...I am not advocating Riley get more time - but how long does the next guy get before the “burn it all down and start over” talks resume? So - since this is all hypothetical talk - Frost is that new man and struggles for the first couple years - what then?...

I guess the trick is getting the right guy. I don’t think anyone expects miracles, but showing progress will buy you time as a coach. Our o-line is still terrible and is the main reason Riley is in deep trouble. Can’t run if you can’t block. In year three that is the antithesis of progress. Ergo, the fan patience is wearing very thin.....or is probably worn out at this point.

Have you seen how Iowa State has been? Their schedule this year is about as tough as a schedule can be.. ISU has already beaten 2 top 5 teams and the next two games are against top 25 teams.
3-9 last year 5-2 this year. Does Iowa State have better talent than NU? Hell no they don't, it is better coaching!!

How many years do you think it should take?

EDIT: I will give the next coach as much time as is needed.. as long as I don't see this kind of crap in year 3.

This was a trending topic on Big Red Overreaction last night. Decker gets to play because of injury and boom he's better. Ozigbo doesn't play and gets in because of injury and boom 3 100 yard games. Weinmaster played last night because of injury and boom, he's good. Jaylin Bradley, the list goes on. Are they actually good talent evaluators?

I don't know how many years it should take, but i am not the one emotion posting after each Nebraska football game going into meltdown mode with the pitchfork and torches wanting Riley's head.

I don't believe Nebraska has the talent that some think they do. I believe Nebraska is farther off from winning and winning big then we all ever imagined. I think Riley is figuring that out and figuring it out the hard way.

I think Bo Pelini for all his issues (and i couldn't stand the dude) got more out of his teams then he will be given credit for.

I think Frost will be brought in and will have the same kind of "holy crap, didn't think it was this bad" wake up call that Riley is currently having - but since he is a "Nebraska guy" will be given a pass and more time then anyone else would be given.

I think Iowa State every so often has a year like they are having this year - lets see them do it consistently - They lost to 2 unranked teams also - so lets not give them the ole Orange Bowl trophy just yet.

I think 4 head coaches, numerous offensive coordinators, numerous defensive coordinators, numerous secondary coaches, numerous this and that - has caused a "WTF" syndrome in this football program and here we are 16 years later....

I have no clue how long it takes to build a college football power - I work in IT and sit my happy ass behind a PC all day - i don't pretend to know the ins and outs of "football building 101"........

That is a good question.. recruiting wise, I think they are basically going after high "star" ranked players and not actually evaluating the player himself.

The only objective measuring stick we have to go with prior to player development by the coaching staff is the recruiting rankings of the classes. As everyone has heard ad nauseam Nebraska consistently out recruits everyone in the West division by a fairly wide margin. So .... we are left to draw conclusions.

There's a whole lot of good sense in here...

The next guy will get more time if he shows progress. Under Riley we've regressed.

As far as talent, both Eichorst and Moos have said that we have the players. As as Spleen said, we have out recruited the B1G West since we've been in the conference.

chuckle, I don't emotion post either after each NU game.

Well, we disagree.. NU is not that far down on talent , some just need to grab onto something to better explain what they are seeing. We have talent!

Bo is gone, don't care to discuss him.

Not sure if Frost will be brought in or not, but the next coach will win and win much quicker because of the talent we have already in place.

Iowa State does not, every so often, have a year like this one. Sorry, but maybe check history before making a claim like that. For ISU, 2000 was their best season going all the way back to 1998, that was 9-3, but at no time during that time frame did ISU beat two top 5 teams in one season, unless I overlooked something. Sure, they pull an upset now and then, but that is totally different than this year. ISU has consistently been a poor team.. some 7-5 seasons but most being 3-9 or 2-9. No need to dog a team to build up our team.

ISU actually has a good number of freshman and sophmore on the 2 deep depth chart on offense and defense.

Funny, OU went through 4 coaches (4th being Bob Stoops) and ended up fine. NU will be going on the 5th, one more coach. OU did it in less than 10 years, so MORE turn over in shorter time than NU

I too, work in IT, software developer, and I am not trying to be an expert.. but I don't need to be. Hell, even Moos himself said we have the pieces in place. Do you discount what he thinks, does he know something about football?

Part of the problem with the fans is that we continue to think and predict that we are going better than we are, and then we lose our minds when we are not. As I said in my long ass post, rebuilding is ugly, but Nebraska fans think, "We're Nebraska. We shouldn't be losing to . . . or get blown out at home."

No. No we shouldn't. But we are not THAT Nebraska anymore. That's just the truth. We are not a competitive team and have not been for a long time. We are at the bottom right now. Whomever is our coach next year will likely struggle. Ohio State in Columbus? Wisconsin in Madison? Michigan in Ann Arbor? Then we get Northwestern in Evanston, and the Spartans and Buffaloes at home. I see three likely losses and four to five losses is probable. If Frost is here, who will be our QB next year? Have we recruited anybody that is a dual threat? Are we going to throw a player to the wolves who either hasn't or has barely seen the field to manage, again, another NEW offense.

About the coaches not playing the "right" players. For crying out loud! Most fan bases complain about that. Every remote control jockey is a freakin' expert. I really find it mind-numbingly thick to complain about something with only a speck of empirical evidence. Ozigbo was the man when he wasn't starting. He starts and 9 yards of rushing offense. Now Bradley is the man. I don't know. Maybe the fans are smarter than most FBS coaches. Maybe most FBS coaches ARE incompetent, unable to evaluate talent, stupid and clueless. I suppose it is plausible. I suppose it is possible that most FBS coaches either don't care about winning or don't play their best players for a number of reasons. Maybe most FBS coaches are that dumb.

I still believe what our program needs is to stick with a coach. Pelini could have been the man if he had a modicum of self-restraint and impulse control. I'm going to support whomever is in charge, because I have no choice. I will continue to root for Riley. If he's not the coach next year, I'll root for the next guy. Unfortunately, if SF is not hired to replace Riley, our splintered fan base will poison the waters for the next guy too. We are our own worst enemies and we are unwilling and unable to accept the fact that rebuilding Nebraska is going to take time . . . and I fear much more time than we are willing to give.
