$600m Stadium Renovation....

I suspect that the reason for abandoning grass has a lot to do with the imperative of using the stadium for much more than just football games. It would be difficult to impossible to maintain a turf field like that when crowds and performers are continuously walking and dragging equipment off and on the playing surface.

And I suspect Coach Rhule is just swallowing it, because the money isn't limitless, and he needs the funds for the roster.

That said, for me, it is depressing that we are not going to have our grass field after all. But not the biggest deal in the world today, IMO.
This summer we have three events scheduled for memorial stadium. One is the Savannah Bananas, they will play 2 games in Lincoln. One at Haymarket Park and the second at Memorial. No reason they both couldn't be played at Haymarket. I seriously doubt they'll even sell out Haymarket, let alone the stadium. The other event in August, the Oklahoma Boys- Cody Jinks, Flatland Cavalry, and American Aquarium. Cody Jinks concerts average under 5000 people and adding some warm up acts might not make much difference. Neither of these two warrants the use of Memorial Stadium.
The third is Zach Bryan-expected to draw 10's of thousands- the only really reasonable use of the stadium. Well maintained grass should be able to recover within a week or two.
It's not like the stadium is used once or twice a week during the off season. How much revenue is actually being made by these events? The cost of firing up and manning the stadium may make these events break even at best.
But what about all the businesses that benefit from action at Memorial stadium? Pinnacle Bank Arena would have the same effect. It holds over 15,000 people.
The multi-use argument is a red herring.
I suspect the problems that Moos had with the multiple bosses he had to answer to is still in play in Lincoln. The turf issue may have just been a message to Rhule that what he wants always has to align with the behind the scenes power brokers.

I understand your point. I'm taking at face value the stated intention to make much MORE use of the stadium "year round," as was described in the stadium improvement project announcement.

That said, The issue of too many fingers in the pot (along with boiling egos) is likely to outlive me, and is a real impediment to the program - as well as to fans' enjoyment of same. In my old age, it is getting easier for me to just ignore the whole thing. I missed half of the football season last year because I was in Thailand with no TV. I will likely miss this coming season completely. Doesn't bother me at all, and I never thought I would feel this way...

Like most things, the farther the Ultimate Deciders are from the people most directly impacted by their decision (in this case, the players and their safety), the less inclined they are to give a damn.

I do think they need to use MS for more events. Turf would be better for those events. I think you need to maximize opportunities for profit. There are enough music stars doing stadium tours. I think the best thing about Omaha and Lincoln is that they are event towns. It would be hard for pro teams, but they do well at events.

You have no idea how awesome American Aquarium is, Dog. If the public wouldn't fall for the garbage played on the radio all the time, they would discover just how great bands like American Aquarium are. They should be selling out Memorial Stadium by themselves. But whatever...

Hey, HBJ, we already have a thread where we talk about bands with their best song being the only good song on the album. ;poke

Football is *supposed* to be played on grass and it is disappointing hearing NUAD say that Memorial Stadium will remain turf.
From my understanding the biggest reason they will stay with turf is they want to be able to heat it for cold weather games but primarily for if they host a home playoff game.

Savannah Bananas sold out both Haymarket and Memorial in just a few hours. I know cause my wife and I wer on the waiting list then she got her time 1 1/2 hours before me. When it was my time they were sold out.

85,000 tickets were sold for Memorial stadium? I could see Haymarket with about 8,500 capacity possible, but Memorial?

I see after a bit of Googling that they are a cultural phenomenon. I guess they're OK playing on turf. Will they truck in dirt for the infield?
I still stand by the idea that limited use wouldn't require extensive work on the grass. Turf has maintenance also.

Yep. They sell out everywhere and are playing in pro and college football stadiums this year. The Athletic dept mad bank and is going to make bank on this game for concessions.

Having played soccer for 13 years when I was younger and played on turf, I'm totally onboard with this. Grass is much easier to control a soccer ball that turf. On turf that ball will bounce all over like a pinball and is much harder to control the ball. Also if you've ever seen a sliding tackle in soccer, you'll know why they installed real grass. Also with the jumping for headers, etc, some times you don't always land on your feet and I'm sure falling on turf on you side, back, knees, etc, would not just hurt but keep you out a couple games. I played on turn one time. Let's just say both teams never wanted to play on turf again. Indoor soccer is a little different and use fewer players and a different type of soccer ball.
