It's time to get out of the kiddie pool and into the deep end as the Huskers take on the Spartans. MSU has looked better, perhaps, than some thought they might, including keeping it close in the first half against Leprechauns in the first half but who were then shut out in the second, losing 27-10.

Sparty is, you may remember, now coached by former Northwestern coach and alum Pat "Thank You Sir May I Have Another" Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald was fired on July 10, 2023, for his "failure to know and prevent significant hazing" in the football program. University President Michael Schill stated that the hazing was "widespread and clearly not a secret," making the head coach ultimately responsible for the broken team culture.

There are some handy tools available online to help Fitzgerald embrace is new role at MSU and all indications are that Sparty has been very welcoming to the new head coach.

However, there is one important question: Why does East Lansing get all the credit?? Who will speak out for Lansing??

NU's (-4.5) first away game this season is a 4pm tip in East Lansing.

A big factor, to me, is the physical battle MSU had in South Bend yesterday. We will be much more rested and fresh, especially late in both halves. I've noticed a bit of a letdown for teams who had a big game the previous week and playing ND was like an additional B1G game. If we get on them early, it could be a bit of a blowout.

You have to put this in its proper perspective, Chris. Fitzgerald is taking over at Sparty, infamous for pedophile Larry Nassar and former sleazebag coach, Mel Tucker, And FYI, one of their starters for the season opener was charged with sexual assault.

Sparty is one of my favorite B1G teams to play but let's face it: they're not well-known for their high, upstanding character (um, same with their sister school.)

PS: Sorry, Chris, but I reluctantly have to give you a C- for this week's cheerleader pic. We're entering conference season, time to step up your game. :)

Michigan State is one team I have not seen play yet this season so I really have no idea what to expect from them schematically. I imagine they'll want to run the ball and play action off of it as that is the recipe most teams try to follow.

What I do know is this will be a physical game, it is the Huskers first road game, and after the game is over, I think we'll have a clearer picture of what type of team we have. My hope is Nebraska goes into East Lansing unfazed and is able to take care of business like they have these past three weeks. My fear is the opposite will happen. Onto the B1G portion of our schedule!

The real season starts this week. No more 24+ point favorites against overmatched opponents. Nebraska opened as a 5.5 point favorite against MSU, and it quickly dropped to 4.5. Let the games begin.

You're of the betting variety, how much of a difference does a 1 point overall drop make? And isn't a drop from being favored 5.5 to 4.5 just an indication that more bets (money) is coming on on the Sparty side?

I mean being favored by 5.5 means to win that bet (if you're betting on Nebraska) the Huskers have to win by 6+. 4.5 means a win by 5+, right?

So what, or how much, of a difference does that 1 point drop make? Are there analytics showing that a 1 point drop (or gain) is significant?

Nebraska enters Michigan State week ranked #10 in total offense and #11 in total defense.

We'll probably drop (hopefully not too far) as we go through league play, but those are numbers that, in addition to what I have seen from the team with my own eyes, makes me cautiously optimistic about Nebraska's prospects for success going forward.

After 3 games Michigan State's defense has given up 12 plays over 20 yards. Only 3 of those are attributable to Notre Dame. Nebraska has given up 5.

I've always admired Coach Fitz from his Northwestern days. His presser today ^^^^^ was a fun listen. He talked about Nebraska about 40% through his talk and was VERY complimentary. Granted, you EXPECT a head coach to praise his team's next opponent. But I sensed no BS from Fitz.

You could tell he has a lot respect for Matt Rhule, Dana Holgorsen, and our players. He described Colandrea as elite and said our offence is "completely different" than last year's. He also said that Jamal Rule reminded him of Lawrence Phillips.

As a veteran Big Ten coach, I noted he opined this is the best Nebraska team he's seen in a long time.
