B1G Officiating

IMG_6773.jpeg We also got hosed when Neyor caught the deep sideline pass early in the game. They ruled correctly that he didn’t have possession when he hit the ground. But the announcers showed video of DB pulling Neyor’s jersey pretty hard before the ball got there. Announcers seemed amazed by the no call.

For those of you who rewatch games later, can you confirm this for me. Ohio State's 2nd touchdown they had a 3rd and 1 at their own 34 yard line. Empty backfield, and the left tackle clearly moved/flinched before the snap, no call, and Howard scrambled for a 1st down. Should have been 3rd and 6 at their own 28. Next play they go over the top on 1st down for 60 yards and a score. So many frustrating calls (or no calls) today. Fix was in.

Back when we first joined the Big Ten, the Husker board i was on at the time had some visiting Penn State fans drop by to welcome us into the league. But they warned us that we needed to get used to getting screwed by the refs. They said the officiating always favors the legacy programs. They said it was frustrating that their team had to beat both their Big Ten opponent as well as the officials each week.

We teased them about being paranoid and added that we were used to being routinely screwed by the incompetent refs in the Big XII so the B1G wouldn't be any different.

Nowadays? I think those guys knew what they were talking about.

They kept showing this play over and over in slo-mo (to see if the ball was caught) and I kept screaming at my TV set "where's the %$#&% flag for HOLDING???!?"

This evening I guess it's Wisconsin's turn to get screwed by the refs. A 60 yard kick return was just called back for a phantom hold. And once again, play by play guys couldn't even ignore the ridiculous call. It's getting bad.

I know our game was so bad that it almost appeared the officials have it in for us, but then I watch other games and see the poor officiating is everywhere. This is the worst I've ever seen it.

It won't change until officials are required to meet with the media and answer questions after games. Officials need to be publicly reprimanded and suspended. Key word public.
That and at some point a coach needs to request an official protest during the game.
The only other thing that would change it is to make it a full time profession and get rid of these part time officials.
The AD needs to come out and ask for an official response from the head of Big 10 officials and frankly call this out. Coitus the fine.
The worst they can do is get screwed. And that is already happening.

When the officials in the booth with the announcers see the probs and comment on it as well, you know it's bad.

Unless this gets fixed it’s going to ruin college football. No one will take any win or loss seriously.

With the money involved in college football these days, including legal gambling, I think corruption is inevitable. There is nothing else to explain some of the calls made in these games. I know this will not be popular because of the length of games already, but I think every play should be reviewable in the booth. The bad spot before the half against Nebraska could have been corrected IMMEDIATELY, it was so bad.

I don't believe that any of the calls or non-calls were due to corruption.
Maybe not, maybe just gross incompetence. Have you seen the documentary on Tim Donaghy, the NBA ref who fixed games for years? It's not as improbable as you think. You would be surprised how easy it is for one ref to change the outcome of a game with just one or two suspicious calls. What is your explanation for a spot a clear 2 yards behind where it should have been today?

I'm watching this defensive battle with between Wisky and PSU. The phantom holding call gave Wisconsin the ball at their own 11-yard line instead of PSU 30. How is holding called when there is CLEARLY no holding?
