We wont have Jimmy to kick around

I suspect there will be a push to promote one of the coordinators - but we'll see if Michigan will accept that risk (see Frank Solich).

Harbaugh leaving to avoid getting his balls slapped by the NCAA is no surprise to anyone that has followed the video/sigh stealing scandal still being investigated.

It'll be different for UM, unless JH also promised one of his assistants the job, and basically ended up with an ultimatum to keep their word or they're walking.

I said it before, if TO wasn't a man of his word, and hadn't promised FS the job...we'd have maybe 3 or more NCs to our name.

I'm no NFL expert and barely a fan. But if I've got a healthy Mahomes or Burrow at QB, I think I've got a decent shot. :)
Yes BUT....you said Tom Brady...he was good but he was also in a crap division, How many years has NY Jets been bad or Miami? Puffalo has been up and down and may hold the record for lost Super Bowls along with the Vikings

That ship sailed when he decided to come to Nebraska. You're not leaving one B1G school for another.
I figure it would take about $150 million to obtain Rhule's services. He still has around $65 million on his NU contract and an equivalent contract with another school would add another $75 million. Staffing changes and buyouts could easily add another $20 million. I don't see that happening even at a school like Michigan or PSU.

There comes a point where the money isn't a big deal anymore when you current salary has you set for life (ask Scott Frost.)

Let's review Matt Rhule's new job after Year 1:
  • He said he wanted to live in a nice city where he and his wife could raise their girls. The Rhules have found in Lincoln a city with a 'small town' vibe with lots to do (plus Omaha close by) without crazy traffic. (Check)
  • He's got a boss he likes in Trev Alberts. (Check)
  • He's got the power to rebuild Nebraska HIS way and with HIS people. (Check)
  • It's not finished yet but he's got arguably The Best or at least One of The Best college football facilities in the country. (Check)
  • He's got the use of private jets to make cross-country recruiting for him and his coaches as fast and hassle-free as an in-state drive. (Check)
  • He's got the opportunity to bring a once-great football power back from the dead. (Check)
  • Despite the losing streak and championship drought, Nebraska has maintained its fanatic fanbase. (Check)
  • And the money? Rhule knows (or should know) that if he wins big, his salary and those of his coaches and support staff will increase. If money would EVER be an issue (which I doubt), Nebraska will cough up whatever is necessary to keep a national championship-caliber coach.
Seriously, what tops that?

People like to talk about the draw of returning to your Alma mater. But with these multimillion dollar business decisions, it comes down to the fit. From the sound of Rhule's comments, he and his wife have found Lincoln to be a beautiful fit. And for the record, I think Coach Rhule fits Nebraska like a glove.

EDIT: Since Matt Rhule's name was mentioned as a possible Harbaugh replacement, I would argue this thread should stay in here in the Husker Football forum.

Good points. I don't think Rhule could improve his work environment by moving on. I was just pointing out how much green it would take to make that happen. Even in today's big dollar environment, 150 million is still a big number. There are several good options available for less than half that.

I don't think the NFL is something Rhule will go back to. He worked for one of the worst owners but they all have quirks that make being a head coach in the NFL challenging and often there are factors out of your control that impact how good the team is (aka owners putting their hands into many decisions the head coach or GM should make). A few coaches figure out how to box out the owner but most don't. Rhule is not going back to that IMHO.
Now as far as PSU - all the stuff Fumble list is true - but if the school you loved and played for comes calling with the same stuff. Money won't matter - them matching what he has and throwing a few cherries on top could be enough to get him to leave. The longer he is here the less likely it is that will happen (unless we do something to piss Rhule off - like hire an AD he hates). Trev is not going anywhere for awhile. I don't see a big risk - Franklin is not good enough to get a fat raise to go somewhere else (including NFL) but he's good enough PSU can't really fire him.

Sorry but I would think MR would have a huge buyout on his contract. That alone should dissuade a move, that and the fact that writers just throw sh*t on the wall to see if it sticks

He does have a huge buyout this early into his contract. Michigan isn't going to go after Rhule because of that. Also he hasn't put out the results yet that would endear himself to them.

I 100% agree with that. Obviously, he was paid some pretty big bucks to jump to the pros but I think two things happened: 1) his experience with the ownership in Carolina left a bad taste in his mouth; and 2) he realized his personality, his passion, and skills were ideally suited to the college game.

I didn't see a "check" after the last bullet. Are you not positive on this one, or did you think there was a character limit on typing? :-)

I don't think playing for the old home school holds much water. Now that Harbaugh is gone, there is not a single Big 10 coach playing for the school he played at. However, there are several HCs who played for other Big 10 schools.

Jim Harbaugh departed the Michigan football program on a high note after winning the national championship. And the search for a new head coach didn't take very long.

Despite national pundits assuming there would be some outside search, the Wolverines looked inside the program. After going 4-0 as an interim head coach while Harbaugh was suspended due to two separate NCAA investigations, offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore was the obvious choice to lead the program. Groomed by Harbaugh to take over, Moore keeps stability within the program, and continues the trajectory of the maize and blue with Harbaugh gone to the NFL.
