QB Richard Torres

What are the chances of Torres being our 2022 QB?
Right now I'd say pretty good;).

I for one am glad to see the direction qb recruiting is going. You need the accessory team pieces to fall into place, but if/when they do, the last couple of recruits is the direction we need to go imo.

I especially like the fact that Lubick was involved. I was meh when I first heard about Lubick coming on board, but I'm hearing really good things about his involvement. Next year will tell a lot, but this coach might really help get the offense jump started.

It sounds like we got a good one here. :nballons:

When it comes to QBs, I don't want a statue but I will sacrifice some speed and quickness to get a passer with an accurate arm. As we have seen under Frost, our lack of ability to go downfield in the vertical passing game has been our Achilles Heel. Without a credible downfield threat, teams just play a short zone and take away all the dink and dunk stuff--including being more able to stop the running game.

The need fr a NFL arm is paramount, he has that.
TO said wind dominates at times, and having that cannon of an arm is essential.
At a camp in Texas, it was very windy, and only 2 qbs were making all the throws, our Mr Torres and a 5 star recruit.
His basketball background fits th staffs multi sport/competitor desires, adds to his awareness, body control and touch.
Hes a good one.
Theres only so many smaller, great running, rocket arm and accuracy type qbs out there, and they usually end up at Okie, bama etc.
People recognize Trevor Lawrence, which RT is similar to

He's a hidden gym, and further along than Trevor at this point in his career.
His li'l brother Michael is often ridiculed for having a name that sounds like a part of the female anatomy.

I have an axiom I use in my life. Its 'there is a reason'.

You know that guy who keeps getting in trouble or 'harassed' by the police....there is a reason.
Or that hot woman who appears near perfect but has been married four times....there is a reason.

So this qb is tall, can throw, and scramble. There is the story of him and this five star kid being the only ones able to throw into the wind (must have been a pretty poor camp).
So I read all this positive stuff but what did I also hear? What was that? He has a 'funky' throwing motion that needs to be fixed? And who's going to fix it?
Look, I am no expert but I've been observing college football for 50 years. I dont care who tutors you or what camp you are in. When a 6 foot 7, 300lb guy is threatening to take a guy down instinct takes over. That funky motion will rear its ugly head.
When you buy a lottery ticket you have a chance of winning but you probably wont. When you sign a three star guy you might get a ringer but probably not. There is a reason he is not a blue chipper. There is no secret cabal undermining this kid. The recruiting services arent perfect but they see a broad range of players and know what a 2,3,4 star looks like.

The issue with your axiom is that people rarely know “the” reason. They often come up with “a” reason that works for them (e.g. “it’s that guy’s fault that the police harass him”, “she must be a head case to be hot yet not be able to keep a man”), with no clue if that reason is even 1% correct.

So Torres isn’t a blue chip recruit…and what’s “the reason”? Maybe he needs polishing. Maybe it’s a lack of exposure because of the limited camps the last 2 years. Maybe he’s played behind a better upperclassman so doesn’t have a lot of film. Maybe the Alabamas and Clemsons don’t look in a place like Reno when they have consensus 5-star guys lining up to sign with them. Sounds like just one reason may not be enough, and that life is complicated.

It’s too early to be defeated about Torres. I wasn’t at all excited about Haarberg. He was lightly recruited and by no means the staff’s first choice, yet he’s come in and surpassed my expectations already. He and Torres are similar in stature, size, and arm talent. And more importantly, the staff seemed to identify Torres as the top of their board a while ago. Time will tell if they were right.

The Hail Varsity video? I am not getting your point. I get as much out of this as the preseason pump up videos.

I am not defeated about him I just apply past experience and knowledge, minus the hope and emotion to these situations. He is a three star prospect because he is a 3 star prospect. Every time we recruit a three star guy message boards come up with reasons why he is really better than that due to some cosmic injustice. My experience with this is because that's probably the capability factor. Not that the more successful schools just aren't paying attention. Believe me they do. If there is some Howitzer qb out there they know about it. At least on a regional basis.
So your theoretical reasons, while seemingly excusing, are not. Needs polishing? Doesn't go to camps? Better upperclassman in high school? Those are all negatives in my book.

And as for Frost's ability to find secretly good qb's and our coaching staff's track record with polishing.....haven't seen a lick of anything resembling that so far.

I find the new trend of 5stars going to bad camps in bad taste.
You can see them scouring the nation searching for bad camps to prove how much better they are, and heres this upstart, a measly 3 star nobody keeping this poor 5 star kid from shining all alone in his chosen bad camp, the nerve of Torres

wow, if Dr. Tom thought the way you do then we would never have had all the O lineman from in state and nearby. the pipeline would not have existed. those guys where mostly unheard-of 3 and lower stars
I remember Dr Rob talking about that in one of his podcasts, about how they players started talking about how few schools wanted them back in they day

It sounds like you are inserting emotions into this, and that’s okay. Lots of us do.

Until Torres gets to campus and starts activities with the team, nobody will really know how good (or bad) he is. Trying to get ahead of that curve by analyzing recruiting rankings and the track record of our coaches is just killing time until the season.
