I actually wondered about this when it happened. Noah Vedral lost his helmet during a play. He had to sit one play out. Luke McCaffrey enters in for one play. As a Freshman, he is allowed to play up to four games and still redshirt. It would have been nice to have McCaffrey go up to Minnesota with still having four games in the bank. He still would have three more games available for upcoming games with Wisconsin, Iowa, and Purdue, Maryland, Indiana. Just for one play, why not use Mo Washington or Wan’dale as a Wildcat? It might have proved interesting and it would have preserved an extra game for Luke instead of blowing one game just for one play.

With the snaps flying all over the place, having a QB back there is a reasonable choice. That said, maybe Bunch would’ve been better. Still, I’m having trouble envisioning needing an extra game out of McCaffrey this year.

What is says to me is that McCaffrey is the number 3 QB and not Bunch or Masker. Let’s hope we don’t need the #3 QB again this season.

It's probably a fair point/question. IIRC, I think the commentators even thought / looked like that HCSF was going to go wildcat in that situation, but then they saw McCaffrey come in.

SF said in an interview he probably make a mistake putting LM in for one play ( I like the fact that SF will admit an error) but I have a hard time seeing where LM will play in 3 more games assuming that AM2's injury will not be a long term issue

On the subject of redshirts, in 2 more games, Pickering will guarantee a redshirt for himself, as there will only be 4 games left

McCaffrey is actually the real backup but they are preserving a redshirt year for him so he will play behind Vedral.

Once fans see McCaffrey at a full sprint in a live football game there are going to be jaws dropping to the floor. He was close to hitting the open space on that one play he ran and if had gotten past that defender it was race on.

Yea, he and Smothers will remind many of TM.

I 100% agree - if he slipped that tackle he had a lane and would likely have ripped off a long run

HuskerOnline - 10 things we learned from Nebraska's press conference

5. Huskers will keep a close eye on McCaffrey’s usage
When Vedral took over for Martinez to start the fourth quarter against Northwestern, quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco asked Frost who he wanted as the new backup in case Vedral had to come out.

Without thinking, Frost said true freshman Luke McCaffrey, who had yet to see playing time in his first season as a Husker. A couple of plays later, Vedral’s helmet came off after a run, requiring him to leave the field for one play.

Before Vedral could even put his helmet back on, McCaffrey was already on the field ready for his first opportunity. McCaffrey rushed for a three-yard gain on his lone snap and then handed the reins back over to Vedral for the rest of the day.

Frost said he had to be mindful of how and when he used McCaffrey going forward, as the ideal plan would still be to play him in only four games to preserve his redshirt eligibility this season.

“Luke is a special athlete, he is going to be a special player," Frost said. "We definitely want to save his years so we have to be smart. I would love to see him out there doing something, but we have to be smart in which other games we play him in... He has got three more to play this year and we’re not going to play him in another.”

We might have to put our most sure handed receiver to take snaps if this continues

Scott said in his interview yesterday that the center needs to be better but he keeps getting better. I understand a coach isn't going to throw his players under the bus, but why even make that statement? It doesn't seem to be any different than the first game as far as where the snaps go....

I have to agree with you on this one, TD4NU.

The old adage is 'we play like we practice.' Well, in the pregame warm-ups when the top three units rotate a play, Every. Single. One. of the first team's snaps were high as opposed to the second and third teams. I have no doubts that CJ is the better blocker but I've seen no improvement in the snaps. Our QB -- and the fans -- are left wondering on each and every play whether the snap will be high or not.

Ya, coach is protecting his players, and I get that. But at some point, it's better to say nothing at all than to try to make statements that aren't reality. I'm sure that keeping it real with fans is pretty low on Frost's priority list, but it also doesn't do any good to tell us everything is fine when it isn't. He seems to be very touchy about saying anything critical about AM, but he is quick to mention that the OL needs to be better, the WRs need to get open. That being said, Frost is in a tough spot in that he has to discuss things that he prefers not to, and constant interaction with a probing press doesn't help his team get better. But, it's part of the gig here at NU, and he knew it when he took the job.....
