Scott Frost's quest to reclaim Nebraska's identity

One quote that really caught my eye:

"Frost admits he and his staff were surprised that UCF broke through as fast as it did. “The same thing will happen here,” Frost says. “We’ll be a little better this year than they were last year, but it takes some time for the kids to really understand the scheme, and the systems and the details that make it work. We need a couple of years of training in the weight room and a couple of years of getting the culture established. Year two is when it’s gonna take off around here—and taking off doesn’t mean we’re gonna go undefeated, but we’ll be a really good team in two years.”"

You beat me to it, cornstar. Just finished reading the same article. I was aware that Sports Illustrated's Bruce Feldman had been in town (Sharp & Benning interviewed him on their radio show last week) and was looking forward to reading his take on Frost's rebuilding effort.

There was a lot of good stuff in the piece but I think my favorite was the paragraph immediately after the one you quoted, cornstar:

"If you think his projection sounds overly confident, you should feel the aura that now permeates the Tom and Nancy Osborne Athletic Complex. Spend a couple of days around Frost’s coaches and players, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a speck of doubt that this place is about to become a college football giant again."

It reminds me of when Boyd Eply said itd be a year and a half, but one thing to notice, we immediately got the lifting champ on the team, the talk of lifting from the ground....
Then it all seemed to die out, like, wed arrived, or, truthfully in hindsite, there was nothing more to say.
Now, we are hearing stories from a lot more guys about two things, weight gained of muscle, and body fat ratios, or, bad weight lost.
It wasnt that detailed before, and the comparative tests were hidden, as we watched our beloved volleyball team kick our football teams butt.
Then, we also hear about the endurance issue , brought out in the fast paced practices.
This sounds to me like a real, true change, something that doesnt happen overnight, like was previously hyped by other staffs weve had here.
Now, add in once the body can keep up, it frees the mind to get it in real time, fast, normal reactions.
Its happening folks!

We have officially entered bizarro world. When Feldman writes a piece saying frost is great the same week that the Daily Nebraskan writes one saying he is overrated it is clear that we've passed through a wormhole and existence is close to becoming a thing of the past.

I see 2 things that convince me Frost has things well in hand even if the W-L record does not reflect what we all want in 2018.

1, He has a vision of what he wants the team to be. Offensive, Defensive, S&C - all married together working toward a goal. Not sure we have really had that since Solich - and let's be honest I think Frank was a little too married to keeping things the same....that's how he ran into issues.
2. He is connecting with players (similar to what Franklin says at PSU - but WAY less creepy). I think Riley connected with some of his players - but not the full roster. In particular he didn't ensure his assistants connected. No more half in approaches.

We heard about player accountability under MR, but leadership was severely lacking, and under Bo, too often there was only one leader.
A leader would have stopped Gerry from doing what he did, or several leaders would have.
I had the feeling that seniority played too much into what little leadership remained from Bos stint, but thats not where leadership comes from.
What amazes me is, if youre supposed to be bringing in accountability, and assess this is what your team needs, you will never win the previous leaders over without leading the leaders through example.
Gerry was left to walk away, TA was allowed to be yucking it up on the sidelines, two of your leaders.
Not every player is a self starter, its the staffs job to make sure each player gets it going, but also, their responsibility to create leadership amongst the players, and to steer it, or oversee it.

What SF is acknowledging is, the importance of a leadership structure within the team, and knowingly, it takes time.
Coming out of highschool, they are all leaders in a way, but its a whole new world when everyones been a leader in hs, now, whos going to lead now, at the next level of excellence?

I really want to drink the KoolAde, but hesitate. I've been an optimistic Nebraska Cornhusker fan for as long or longer than anyone else on this board, seen worse NU teams than last years, but dammit, I've been disappointed so many time the past 15 years that I almost can't believe.......almost.

THAT'S the spirit, Navy60. Hang in there for another round. I would argue there's A HUGE DIFFERENCE with this hire from the others since Tom's retirement from coaching.

With each of the four coaches since TO, fans hoped The Program would build The Man in charge.

With Scott, we see The Man in charge building back The Program.

Weve had three coaches that were somewhat inflexible, one too stubborn, one set in his ways, ones brain and head too big, to change and or learn, going forwards.
One said, one defense fits them all, one gave us a watered down product that looked like football, one gave us a rock.

SF is learning, growing, and seeking new things, while also filling in, or better, rounding out the edges on creating a better practice, a better workout etc.
He is equal to, miles ahead, and on the move teaching, learning to teach, learning his system, than our previous three coaches.
We are in good hands.
