Here's what we started with when things were at peak bloom about 5 years ago

This turned into mostly weeds at the end of 2025. I will spare you the ugly. BUT - we are 99% done with a full re-do. As soon as it gets sunny (and we get to 100%) I will share a couple photos. My wife and son did most of the work - although I contributed as well. Very excited we actually will get this done before the first freeze.

A quick summary of what we did. I mostly move mulch, bricks, and bags of soil from wherever we got them to the backyard. That includes 4 palettes of bags we had delivered and multiple runs to the garden store with the trusty minivan loaded down with whatever was needed.
  • Dug up all the perennial flowers still alive - mostly Irises, Lilies and Daylilies. (This included removing all weeds tangled in with the flowers - a rather painstaking process.)
  • Rototilled entire garden
  • Installed 18 6x3x1 raised garden beds (2 held in reserved for next year - we ran out of plants at 18 beds so I assume my wife will be buying more to finish the other 2 next Spring)
  • Install included leveling, weed barrier/cloth and about 6 bags of raised bed soil per box
  • Planted all perennial flowers as garden boxes were finished
  • Mulch everything - walkways, garden boxes, etc.
  • There was also some work done to fix the edging of the garden - mostly digging and installing bricks with weed barrier to keep the yard from growing into the garden
Finishing off the last few plants and mulch install. Should be sunny this weekend so I will get a photo of the final product.

OK - got some sunny weather Saturday so took a couple pictures. Everything is 100% and ready for winter. We had to add 'Toots' the owl due to squirrels getting into some of the newly planted flowers. Working really well!

And Toots worked? We had one of those owls in my flower bed under the living room window. Saw a squirrel perching on its head one day so I chucked the worthless thing into the trash. Unfortunately the damn squirrel jumped off our Toots and scampered off. I'm sure he was laughing at me as he scaled one of our maple trees.
