Not a barn burner of a record. I've been good with it being progress but I really don't see what has happened the last 3 games as progress. I'm hoping someone will give him a swift kick in the behind and he'll get his act together as coach but I fear the damn coaching carousel is about to kick into high gear yet again. Y'all know I'm not a fan of the coaching carousel AT ALL.

The problems seem apparent enough.

1) Holgorsen isn't calling a good game or one suited to this staff or playing in the Big Ten. Rule is a stud running back. We paid a ton of NIL money for this offensive line and brought in a good coach for that unit. So run the ball for God's sake. Many many many times. Beat the crap out of them. Control the clock and the tempo. And build out offensive concepts like play action based on the running game. Make things easier for Colandrea. Instead, we get weird passing plays that go nowhere and Colandrea scurrying around the backfield with no one open. Holgorsen is caught in the trap of wanting to look like an innovative and clever genius rather than being boring and simply winning games. He needs to be fired and replaced with a boring but effective coordinator who will build a running offense.

2) Special teams is a problem. Our FG kicker sucks. We clearly miss Eckler and letting him leave was a mistake. Not having a stud coordinator compounds that error. Special teams can be just as important as the other units. Rhule has been a coach long enough he should know that. I have no idea why Satterfield still has a coaching spot but there is no spot designated for special teams.

3) Colandrea is a gamer and has moxie, but is also very limited. He looks great against lesser teams and struggles mightily against better teams. His size is a limitation. He gets happy feet in the pocket and makes poor decisions. He needs more help from the line and his receivers need to do a better job of getting open. But yesterday's dumpster fire was partially on him and inexcusable. We need a real open competition in the spring.

4) The culture sucks. Winners find way to win and losers find ways to lose. We have a losing culture. Contrast our meltdown with the way Indiana beat the odds to win against Minnesota. This is the hardest problem to diagnose and fix. We need coaches and players that are far tougher, especially mentally...and simply refuse to lose.

5) I am sick to death of excuses. These are the coaches and players Rhule has chosen. He has had years to get this right and failed to do so. In the meantime, schools that were far worse like Indiana and UCLA are rolling merrily along.

So fire Holgorsen and replace him with a coordinator who will run a Big Ten offense. Fire Satterfield and use that coaching spot to hire the best special teams coordinator available. Tell Rhule he has a year to show progress or he will be replaced. Evaluate the staff and players based on mental toughness and fire those who don't make the cut. And bring in a team of sports psychologists and exorcists to figure out why we are so good at finding ways to lose.
Good post. They ran the ball 12 times for 74 yards in the 1st quarter. 2nd quarter only 4 rushing attempts. In the 3rd quarter Rule only got one carry and it was on the last play of the quarter. HCMR mentioned the bear front they were using at times in the presser. Do we not think that they also used that against Iowa? Iowa kept running and got over 260.

I hate to sound like an eternal optimist, which I am not, but I truly hope someone has a "Come to Jesus" moment with HCMRh and he gets his act together quickly. We all know what direction we are headed if he doesn't. It's a direction that I don't relish thinking about.

Rhule isn't gonna fire Holgerson. The only way the culture gets better is Rhule changes how he coaches and holds everyone accountable including himself and hire the best coaches friends or not. Or he gets fired. The latter is more likely to happen.

And I had mentioned yesterday in a couple threads about Indianas improbable comeback with a backup QB and Kicker. It takes stones to do that. QB Cignetti had no choice. Hoover went d0wn with an injury but to replace your kicker with a little.know backup to drill a 60 yearder with room to spare? That takes a big sack of stones. He did it and did it confidently. Which translated to that Kicker having the confidence to make that FG. That's a winning culture and Rhule can do it but he would have to make a total 180 in philosophy.

I dont know, from listening to the announcers the kid who did the kicking was the one expected to. He was the long range kicker they just hadnt kicked very many if any.

Perhaps but I'd rather hear from Cignetti himself. The folks doing the highlights after that game said the starting kicker was pulled because of the misses. So who knows. Maybe they will ask Cignetti about that during their PC today. Anyway still a stud kicker to drill that 60 yarder.

Your right Suh, we need our own elusive Cignetti. However I think the Indy versioin of him is patented and copyrighted, what are the chances that in a single game with one minute left are that we get to see TWO 60 yrd field goals? LUCK! Indy Cignetti has it all.

My amateur coach opinion is that we run too much East-West stuff and not enough, "up the gut" North-South stuff. This IS the Big Ten.

Jay Moore said the same thing on the Radio broadcast. There is such a thing as scheming to run up the middle. I watch other teams do it all the time. Remember, it is also about body blows to a team.

I hate to use phrases like, "Back in the old days"........But back in the old says, we used to run up the gut against fast, athletic defenses like OU. IMO, everybody in the B1G has fast, athletic defensive players so to out-physical them, you've got to hit them head-on. Our problem has been that for every sweet play Rule or Nelson made between the tackles Saturday night, they'd have similar plays that got stuffed or went for 1 or 2 yards. Not every running play between the tackles is going to break, but our OL has GOT to block well enough that you can get four yards at a minimum. It's damn tough to sustain long drives when it's second down and 9-12.

It is the body blows that add up. The B1G is back in the old days. That is how it is still won. Throw a couple of counters in, and we will be fine. It is a 60-minute game. We averaged 4.6 yards per carry. We threw the ball 45 times and ran 29 times. Only a few people in the entire world can't figure this one out. The problem is they wear headsets and have an N on their hat. The rest of the world, including a billion people in China, can probably figure this out.

FWIW, Washington started loading up the box to stop us so we countered with some big pass plays. The problem was the Huskies' secondary rose to the occasion as well as our some of our best WRs got an unfortunate case of the dropsies.

This is where we needed Dink and Dunk Dylan. Also, get AC out in space; if he breaks containment, he needs to get some yards. This helps get people out of the box. JMHO, Rule was still getting yards with bodies in the box.

This is a chess game. The problem is that our chess players don't even seem to know where their pieces are.

If Nebraska ends the season with 7 losses - yeah probably everyone gets fired. If we eek out a win or 2 and get to a minor bowl game - Rhule likely keeps going but will again have to make changes to his staff in hopes addressing the offense and special teams. Assuming our DC doesn't bail - which if I was him.....I'd take a payday elsewhere given the option to do so.
I really don't get the offensive struggles - but watching AC back there with tons of time against Washington only to not be able to make a play.....something is not right. Either our plays suck, our skill guys suck or AC is struggling to get through the progressions - maybe not trusting some players? It looks bizzare to have that much time and then throw a YOLO bomb or into double coverage. He wasn't having these issues earlier this year so maybe B1G D's now have Dana figured out on taking away the first 2-3 reads - and he can't or hasn't coached AC on how to handle it. AC ran earlier this season when he didn't find open receivers - Washington tried to take away the run lanes - they didn't want him to make big plays with his legs.
Honestly - it really felt like Dana got MASSIVELY outcoached vs. Washington. Sorry - that shouldn't happen and is why I would be fine if he got fired immediately.

5 Areas for improvement

  1. Dana Holgorsen. Holgorsen's weekly press conferences are known for his blunt honesty, so I'll take the same approach. When two of your quarterback's first five throws end in interceptions, you'd be a damn fool to make downfield passing a cornerstone of your offensive game plan. And yet, that's what happened.
  2. Anthony Colandrea. I'm thrilled he has re-signed for 2027, and I have zero reason to believe that impacted his play Saturday. But this was a horrible time his worst game as a Cornhusker. You may care about the local media getting quotes for their stories, but declining to answer questions after the game is a tough look for accountability and culture.
  3. Kyle Cunanan. Any kick inside 40 yards has to be automatic. The kicker gets the blame (and hears the boos), but that goes for the snap and holder too.
  4. Turnovers. It is nearly impossible to win when you are minus three in turnovers. This is the one thing I'll criticize the defense for.
  5. Litterbugs. I completely understand the anger, frustration, disappointment, and more felt by Husker fans during that ugly collapse. I do not understand the purpose of throwing water bottles (and other items) onto the field. Next time, do what I did: yell a profanity, walk back to the car in stunned silence, and then eat lukewarm pizza like you're Urban Meyer.
