Two Quickie Game Thoughts for a game NONE of you want to rehash:

Emmett Johnson. It's an absolute crime he wasn't selected as one of the Doak Walker Finalists. Of all the great RBs that I've watched play over the years, in my opinion, none of them developed more than EJ did from his first season as a Husker through to today (what will be his last.)

Officiating. I was spitting nails in the second half when the officials blew the game wide-open with their mind-boggling incompetence. When the Iowa player nailed Jacory who fumbled in the endzone for a safety, I told my son not to worry because they’d reverse themselves because it was a textbook case of targeting. Then when the officials huddled, I waited for the signal it was being overturned, then, after their huddle, they announced...yesssirree, it was a safety. Where was the ^%$#$#^ REPLAY???!? My understanding is that potential targeting is ALWAYS a reviewable play because the game wants to remove targeting. Hell, we routinely get all kinds of moronic targeting calls (that clearly aren’t) because they’d rather error on the safety side. SO HOW DID THEY MISS ONE SO OBVIOUS??? 90,000 people could clearly see it, how did they not? Okay, end of rant.

STATE OF THE PROGRAM.

I have to say that I’m surprised and disappointed by this 7-5 regular season. Over the next few weeks, I'm sure we’ll analyze the hell out of it, but here’s my initial ‘pop psychology’ take:

THE 'BROTHERHOOD' TOOK A COUPLE GUT PUNCHES. The players spent all Spring, Summer, and Fall talking about how close they were with one another and with their coaches. I believe it was true and hoped it was the kind of tight bond that could lead to great things come Fall. But I was also aware we were planning to play an awfully lot of young players which is one of those 'you never know what to expect' kind of deals.
  • GUT SHOT #1. My sense is that the team had their confidence sorely shaken when the CFB world was telling them before the Minnesota game that their coach was the odds-on-favorate to be coaching Penn State next season. I will go to my grave believing THAT news story over the short week directly led to our poor play versus the Gophers.
  • GUT SHOT #2. It happened again (IMO) following the UCLA win when the rumor mill started swirling through the locker room that "Psst, guess what? Looks like Dylan might leave." Folks, for all the money that’s now part of the sport, it’s still a game played by still-maturing, young men. You know, those kids are much more inclined to 'lose their sh*t' than all of us mature men and women of the BHF. :)
RHULE WAS SHAKEN TOO. I’ve never seen Matt Rhule look as down and depressed as he did this week. No doubt, he’d heard the Raiola whispers but when he went to see Dayton, he got more bad news from Dom than just Dayton's decommit. His reaction is understandable but he did a horrible job of hiding it from the press (and I'm guessing his fellow coaches, players, and staff. I believe it set the mood for everyone, fans included, going into today's game.) But it's going to become a regular part of this new age of CFB—sometimes you can’t control the crap that happens to you as a coach. We’ll just have to wait and see how this plays out.

THE SUN WILL COME UP TOMORROW. After these past two losses, I know it’s an automatic eyeroll to look at the positives, but there are many. Yes, there are plenty of concerns too but given the level of depression amongst the fanbase right now, me thinks we need to keep a few things in mind: 1) we had a young team that’s only going to get better: 2) Rhule is a defensive ball coach at heart and I know it really burned his butt to see a defense of his unable to stop teams like Iowa and Penn State--somehow someway, he will make damn sure its much better next year; 3) we are prepared with a quality recruitment staff, a quality GM, and a boatload of NIL money to hit the transfer portal hard next January; and 4) despite current opinions to the contrary, Matt Rhule is a quality head coach.

"GET RID OF THE BUM!" If you disagree with me about Rhule, that's fine. But know that I’m old enough to remember all the grief Tom Osborne routinely got from fans year after year after year. I saw fans who spent years telling anyone who would listen that ‘Osborne doesn't have what it takes’ and we should 'wise-up and fire his ass' would later hail him as one of the best coaches in the business. This kind of ‘head coach talk' will always follow blowout losses -- be it Osborne, Pelini, or Rhule, it goes with the territory.

There was a song by Tammy Wynette in the late 60s. It was an admirable song from a bygone era. People don't think that way anymore. I can't remember the name of it.

This is where the AD steps up and offers advice much as you have posted. Oh yes tell Rhule some assistants go and if they dont, they all go. Rhules indecisions have hurt the team. With all the firings, you would think we could find some out of work coaches that are better than the ones we have. Hell, we could go poaching too. Im really tired of losing important games. Oh yes third game of the year where we got soundly beaten on every side of the ball.

I keep hearing year after year, “back in my day they tried running TO out of Lincoln” I don’t get the comparison. Sorry DR. I just don’t. Rhule like Riley is getting his a$$ handed to him by dog $h!t teams. Iowa is nothing special. Minnesota is horrible and look what they did to us. PSU didn’t even have their head coach or starting QB and it was over before it started. Show me TO get beat like that to crap teams and then that comparison will hold water.

I didn't want to say it, but it does need to be said. How many times have we heard Matt Rhule say this:

"This is the team I've been waiting for." - Matt Rhule (Regarding the 2025 Huskers)

So this is the team you've been waiting for, huh Matt? A team that:

* Is so physically weak, they get absolutely mauled by any opponent that runs the ball?
* Has OTs who can't pass block?
* Has a DL that can get off blocks?
* Can't make tackles?
* Makes mental errors nearly every snap?
* Takes bad angles and misses practically every tackle allowing for a big play?
* Has WRs who can't get open?
* WRs who can't catch any pass that is contested?
* Has a defense that can't stop the run?
* Cannot get any pressure on the QB at all?

All this ^^...and THIS is the team you've been waiting for????

I have lost all faith in Matt Rhule. We've now lost like 12 games in a row to Iowa and yesterday was by far one of the most embarrassing losses I've witnessed in my 47+ years of Husker fandom.

I have a sad, sinking feeling Nebraska is never going to be good in football ever again. We keep hiring one sh***y coaching staff after another. We're cursed. We're cursed.

* We can't win back to back road games
* We can't beat ranked teams
* We play teams with = talent we get absolutely mauled.

If I had pro-Rhule blinders on before, they've been torn off. Seeing Iowa drop 40 on us, at home, on Senior Day was absolutely embarrassing and humiliating. I realize the Sun will rise in a few hours as I am typing this, but the cloud, the stain, the utter stink of this loss to Iowa is going to linger for a very long time.

"We're a Volleyball school that sometimes plays Football."

I FEEL...tear it down pretty much to the base fabric of what Husker FB is...NOT what people think progress dictates.

Go back to Nebraska HSs...give a nail (figuratively) to anyone willing to eat it. THOSE are the guys we need. We can teach them the skills. Which for us comes down to be more man than them.

Half our team probably checked out mentally because of the weather alone.

We need the farmer boy types...who get up at 5 to help their fathers,(weather be damned), in the field before going to school, go to practice, come home and do a couple more hours with their dad...rinse and repeat the next day, and the next day, and the next...guys willing to eat nails.

I don't need "pretty" players...which a lot of times on the field isn't anyway...I need the guys that understand FB is a violent sport; therefore, needed to be played by gladiators. Not guys wanting a flag every play, but guys that dust themselves off and get ready for the next play. Three yards and a cloud of dust is all I need.

I know we have very tough players, but we need tough teams again.

I can't remember which player said it, but it was something like: " We may not win every game, but we wanted them to know who they played, and make them feel it for a week."

My take:

* We are sorely lacking in the triple S, (Strength, Size, Speed) We have been out physicaled (is that a word) all year. For strength, I haven’t seen many big hitters on D this year, so many arm tackles that result in big gains. Trucking an opponent is not in our repertoire.

* I hate Iowa, but I do admire their Defense, especially their DC, Phil Parker. Honestly, I feel that they have the same type of athletes we have. The big difference is that he has been around for ages. He knows exactly the type of athlete he needs who fits his system and the mindset they possess. They are highly disciplined, very few penalties. They have been playing great D for decades. More importantly they play as a cohesive unit. We forget that Tom Osborne was blessed with a DC’s who have been around and get players to fit and believe in their system. It’s called consistency and continuity. We have had a revolving door of DC’s over the past 20 years.

* Hate to say this if we don’t improve on the above points, we will become The Washington
Generals in a world playing the Harlem Globetrotters.

We are soft as a team Iowa is not.

I was in the South endzone, when it got to about right after the safety, fans started to leave. After it hit 33, I think we got down to maybe 15k fans, or less...half of which were Iowans naturally.

My son and I stayed until all zeros hit the clock, but what was left in the stands rivaled HS playoff attendance.

Fumble I think our 7-5 record would be far different if we had either beaten Iowa to become 7-5 or lost another close one to end up 7-5. After yesterday's game this 7-5 showed almost no progress IMO. The only saving grace was EJs 217 yard rushing game. And as far as I can find, this is the 1st time Nebraska had a 200+ yard rusher and lose since before I was born. Another record ended. Also they reported on the news that this is the 7th time in a row Ferentz has beaten us at home. He bypassed Bud Wilkinsons 6 times in a row. The Gut punches just keep on coming. :(

Sorry, but yesterday is the day I mentally moved on from Rhule. Nobody of importance cares, but that's where I am.

I lost all respect for him as a human when he played Nebraska to get more money and I lost all respect for him as a coach when his teams got absolutely humiliated by PSU and Iowa.

Get through the next two years, fire him, and start over. Again.

Next year is going to be ugly.

I think it's happened a couple of times. Rick Burns against Missouri in '78.

As I've said, I like Matt Rhule and I like the culture he is attempting to establish. But here's what I've observed: he's not a motivator, and he's not a confidence-builder. He should have thrown the biggest fit in the history of college football after the f%cked up non-targeting call, 15-yard penalty be damned. Go all Bo Pelini? Hell yeah! Players need to know that their coach gives a sh$t; a wave of dismissal at the refs doesn't get it done.

Then you gather the team around you, you rant and rave about the call, and you tell them we're not going to let these a$$hole refs steal this game from us, and you don't stop ranting until you get 100% agreement from the team. It's pretty obvious that he and the whole team's daubers went straight into the dumper after that call, and he did nothing to try to counter it.

Sorry, KR, but I doubt becoming Mad Bo would have accomplished anything positive.

THIS I agree with!

That’s exactly what happened back in 1978 when Nebraska’s John Ruud slobberknockered OU’s Kelly Phelps and fumbled the ball which the Huskers recovered. The officials said Phelps was down and gave OU the ball back. Osborne gathered the team around him and said basically what you said — with the expletives removed. :)

That call did not cost us the game, although it might have been the turning point.

We lost to Penn State and Iowa because we don't have enough good players. EJ was the best player on the field, but we don't have enough difference-makers to win against the better teams on our schedule each year.

The best teams have players who step up to the moment and elevate their play to a winning level. Outside of EJ, we just don't see enough of that.

I'm discouraged after these final two games because I'm beginning to doubt if we're on the right path. I see games like these last two and Minnesota where Rhule says something like "I didn't expect this..."

I don't expect to win every game, and sometimes it just isn't your day. But my confidence in this staff, while not shattered, is beginning to show some substantial foundational cracks.
