Very glad we got him. If given enough time, I think this will work well with both parties involved. I will stick with my prediction that after spring ball I think we might lose a quarterback or two, but time will tell. From what I hear about Whipp all the qb's will be better for their time under his tutelage.......it's just a matter of time and patience.
I MIGHT have just a little insight into Chubba's injury and two subsequent surgeries. In the not too distant past my wife broke her clavicle riding her bicycle, and also required surgery. A plate was implanted and remains there yet. The recovery was rather long. The bone has to heal, but that is just the beginning. Depending on where it is broken, there is most likely is tendon and ligament trauma. This restricts movement and requires a fair amount of time and rehab. After this she might be done.......but maybe not. As the surgeon stated the plate gives an added security, but it can inhibit mobility. Nearly 50% of those receiving the plate have it removed because of issues with the plate.....eg loss of complete range in comfort, irritation (shoulder pads rubbing for example), and increased sensitivity to blows to the area. I'm GUESSING that Chubba's second surgery might have been to remove the plate. The issue with that is when the screws are removed the bone must heal itself in the holes remaining.......again more time and rehab. The good news is that the broken spot is often eventually the strongest part of the bone. The collar bone is the most broken bone in the body.......the leading young victims are contact sports athletes (ie football players), and cyclists. As one rider told us you're not a real cyclist until you break your collar bone.
What MIGHT this mean for Chubba at this juncture? Well, we've heard how he lost his place in rotation at FSU. It might not mean he wasn't as good as advertised, but rather the injury and surgeries merely set him back. Broken clavicles aren't insurmountable, but they can take precious time away from an athlete trying to climb, or hold onto his place, on the ladder. Maybe he might be ready to go full bore this spring.......but maybe not. If Whipp can "school" this young man in another year he might be everything he was supposed to be coming out of high school......this coming season....or maybe the next.
I'm very excited to get this young man. I hope he takes the opportunity to learn and become the best he can be during his time here.
